Description

Vide Cor Tuum
sugar glass, copper wire, painted leaves

“Behold your heart,” begins a quote from Dante Alighieri’s prosimetric work La Vita Nuova. Beatrice, the great love of his life and subject of the Divine Comedy is first introduced here, and in a feverish vision, Dante sees her consume his fiery heart.

Sugar glass casting seemed the appropriate and elegant solution to creating an “edible” heart. The ingredients (sugar, water, and a minute amount of cream of tartar) were heated to 300° (known as “hard crack” stage - how lollypops and hard candies are made), then poured into a silicone jacket mold which was bolstered by a plaster mother. It is mostly solid, with a pleasant weight to it, and as it was still solidifying last night, it really felt like I was holding something warm and living.

The laurel half-wreath is a nod to the traditional means of celebrating poets, incorporated to specifically tie Dante to this object.
